Numerical reasoning test practice

Eight questions on three small tables, with the working shown after each. Most numerical tests ask for simple maths under a tight clock, so speed and reading the table correctly matter more than hard maths.

Numerical reasoning8:00

Eight questions on three small tables. A calculator is fine, as it usually is in the real thing. 8 questions, 8 minutes. Nothing you pick leaves this browser.

  1. Question 1 of 8

    Region2024 (£m)2025 (£m)Staff 2025
    North48.054.0120
    Midlands36.033.390
    South72.079.2150
    Wales12.013.840

By what percentage did North revenue grow from 2024 to 2025?

    Show the answer

    12.5%. Growth is the change divided by the starting figure: (54.0 − 48.0) ÷ 48.0 = 0.125, so 12.5%.

  2. Question 2 of 8

    Region2024 (£m)2025 (£m)Staff 2025
    North48.054.0120
    Midlands36.033.390
    South72.079.2150
    Wales12.013.840

What was total revenue across all four regions in 2025, in £m?

    Show the answer

    180.3. Add the 2025 column: 54.0 + 33.3 + 79.2 + 13.8 = 180.3.

  3. Question 3 of 8

    Region2024 (£m)2025 (£m)Staff 2025
    North48.054.0120
    Midlands36.033.390
    South72.079.2150
    Wales12.013.840

Which region had the highest revenue per member of staff in 2025?

    Show the answer

South. Per person: North £0.45m, Midlands £0.37m, South £0.528m, Wales £0.345m. South is highest.

  4. Question 4 of 8

    Region2024 (£m)2025 (£m)Staff 2025
    North48.054.0120
    Midlands36.033.390
    South72.079.2150
    Wales12.013.840

Midlands revenue fell in 2025. If it falls by the same percentage in 2026, what will it be, to one decimal place, in £m?

    Show the answer

    30.8. The fall was 33.3 ÷ 36.0 = 0.925, a 7.5% drop. 33.3 × 0.925 = 30.8.

  5. Question 5 of 8

    Graduate intakeApplicationsInterviewedOffers
    Audit2,40036060
    Tax1,50030045
    Consulting3,00027030

What share of Audit applicants received an offer?

    Show the answer

    2.5%. 60 ÷ 2,400 = 0.025, so 2.5%.

  6. Question 6 of 8

    Graduate intakeApplicationsInterviewedOffers
    Audit2,40036060
    Tax1,50030045
    Consulting3,00027030

Which intake has the highest offers-to-interviews ratio?

    Show the answer

    Audit. Audit 60 ÷ 360 = 16.7%, Tax 45 ÷ 300 = 15.0%, Consulting 30 ÷ 270 = 11.1%.

  7. Question 7 of 8

    TicketPeak (A$)Off-peak (A$)
    Single4.803.36
    Day pass11.208.40
    Weekly44.0038.50

What percentage discount does an off-peak single give on a peak single?

    Show the answer

    30%. The saving is 4.80 − 3.36 = 1.44, and 1.44 ÷ 4.80 = 0.30, so 30%.

  8. Question 8 of 8

    TicketPeak (A$)Off-peak (A$)
    Single4.803.36
    Day pass11.208.40
    Weekly44.0038.50

Someone makes ten peak singles a week. How much do they save by buying a peak weekly ticket instead, in A$?

    Show the answer

4.00. Ten singles cost 48.00. The weekly costs 44.00. The saving is 4.00.

How to do better on this test

Read the units first

Millions or thousands, per month or per year. A surprising share of wrong answers comes from the table headings and has nothing to do with the arithmetic.

Know four calculations cold

Percentage change, percentage of a total, ratios and rates. Almost every question is one of those wearing a different hat.

Estimate before you press

If the answer options are far apart, a rough estimate often settles it and saves a minute.
